Downloading an online fitness video is a convenient, instructive way to learn Pilates. If you've never experienced this unique core discipline, you'll find that Pilates strengthens your body, tightens your stomach and teaches you mind-body awareness. If you're a Pilates beginner, remember the following tips:
- It's important to prepare for your core workout by warming up muscles and increasing circulation. Common warm-up exercises include pelvic tilts, toe dips, hundreds, single-leg stretches, roll-ups and swimming.
- Remember to modify exercises and create custom workouts until you're comfortable with more intensity. Helpful modifications include (A) using bent legs rather than straight legs, and (B) allowing your head to rest on the ground rather than curling your shoulders off the floor.
- Maintain neutral spine during your online fitness video. Your lower back should be relaxed and in its natural, curved position. Pull your abdominals in to support this neutral spine pose.
- Don't forget to breathe. As you'll learn in each online fitness video, breathing is an important part of Pilates training. You need to expel stale air and supply the muscles with oxygen.
- Modify for tight hamstrings by placing a foam wedge or rolled towel underneath your hips. This will allow you to complete the exercises without hamstring and lower back discomfort.
